Folklor is a small 🇨🇦 business.
And while, we are looking forward to today’s moments of togetherness with family, as Canadians we must acknowledge what being Canadian means. It has not been 155 years of celebrations.
Canada is a colonized territory. The legacy of this country includes a horrific history too often left out of the narrative, as we are busy setting off our fireworks. If we are going to build a better future, we need to acknowledge the violence that makes up the fabric of this country. We need to mourn the mass unmarked graves of Indigenous children stolen from their homes and put in the residential school system.
A better Canada requires reflection. It requires listening and learning from Indigenous Peoples, on whose land we live.
If we want to have true pride in our citizenship, we need to examine the irreparable harm caused. If we spend our time only celebrating Canada, we can never hope for a better tomorrow.
