In my community, if a young lady isn't married or at least spoken for by the time she's 21(ish), more often than not, she's considered an oddity and not eligible for dating or marriage, because something must be "wrong with her" if she hasn't gotten married by then. I'm now 25 years old and haven't been in a relationship for about 5 years. Most of my friends from high school are married with at least two children by now. On Sundays, I attend a religious congregation comprised of young single adults from ages 18-30, and the young men in that congregation are either too young for me, already in a relationship, not interested in me, or the wrong kind of "interested" in me.
For the last few years, I'd started feeling like I wasn't worth the effort of getting into a relationship and started to let myself go. I only dressed nice for work, I started and stopped many exercise regimens, and I started overeating to compensate for general adult-level stress. I've pretty much doubled my waistline in the seven years since I graduated high school, and I've started developing mild depressive episodes because of the apparent hopelessness of my situation.
When I saw a MentalFloss article about your rings, the idea of a commitment to self-love really struck a chord with me. I thought that even if I wasn't worth it to someone else, I could still be worth it to me. I could start taking care of myself for me. I could start dressing up for me. I could be fine with being single as long as I was satisfied with who I was. As I read that article, I realized how badly I wanted to love myself and knew that I had to have one of those rings to help me remind myself how worth it I am to me.
