The history of Celtic design in jewellery is a lot older than many would guess. The earliest pieces of jewellery unearthed date as far back as 4400 BCE in Varna (modern-day Bulgaria). Celtic Europe produced distinctive jewellery during the Iron Age (1200 BCE – 400 CE). Popular at the time were torcs, fibulae, and large spiral bracelets with geometric patterning applied. Rings were very rare. Modern "Celtic Jewellery" is reminiscent of motifs you would see in The Book of Kells: "...ornate knot and whiplash Celtic motifs, a revival of which is seen in the English Victorian Scottish jewelry and later Arts and Crafts jewelry."
