Can you find the queen in this picture? The queen bee starts in the same egg as a worker bee would, except in a bigger cell, called a queen cell. She is fed an abundance of royal jelly (A protein-rich substance formed from glands on a bees head). A normal worker bee would only be fed little of royal jelly, and then move on to pollen and nectar as protein, also known as bee bread. But the queen is fed on royal jelly exclusively, making her bigger than the rest of the workers. Then she goes off to mate with drones (male bees) and a week or two later starts laying eggs! ?
