In 1966 at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge while testing a new electron microscope a haematologist named Alex Bangham saw something that in the years to come would change medicine forever. While sitting with colleagues later that same day he named the discovery “liposome.” Four years later, Bangham was one of the authors of a paper titled, “The Action of steroids and streptolynsin S on the permeability of phospholipid structures to cations” which introduced liposomes to the wider scientific community. Since then Liposome technology has been used to improve targeted drug delivery and now to solve low bioavailability of traditional supplements. As his discovery continues to ripple through modern medicine and wellness we remember the Father of the Liposome and thank him for his work.
