Happy #earthday2018 from myself @thelifeofrileynz and the team @icebreakernz
My lifestyle allows me to appreciate all that the earth has to offer, on land and in sea. But it continually impresses me with its beauty. Rainbows this morning for one, but also the everyday fact I learn about what the earth does to help us survive.
Did you know 70% of earth is ocean?
Did you know the ocean is the major regulator of climate and atmospheric carbon uptake? Did you know 1/3 or the world relies on it for food, but soon there will be more plastic in it than fish?
It is important to get out and explore what our earth has to offer, so that you are exposed to its stunning beauty. Only then will you value it, utilise it for food, fun, or friendships, and then and only then, have the actual will to protect it.
As there becomes more and more people on this earth we need to encounter earth's beauties before they disappear. If we see them we will protect them. And it's often very simple to do so.
Don't litter, reduce plastic intake, use a bar of soap like we used to rather than a bunch of bottled product. Eat from your garden. Ride a bike. Help an animal. Support and use sustainable organic fabric like wool. Travel. Feed someone who's hungrier than you.
We are not what makes the world go around, but we are part of how it feels while doing it.
Today I am going to explore a mountain top I look at every day but have never been to. It looks back at my own home, above the ocean, above where I surf, fish and dive. I am hoping for some perspective of where I am lucky to call home, stunning New Zealand, and help fuel my desire to show people how to re engage with nature.
Stay tuned for the view this afternoon, and tell me what you are going to check out in your own backyard.
