Pre, pro and… postbiotics?
As our understanding of the microbiome continues to evolve, so does our understanding of how it interacts with the host to provide systemic health benefits. A recent example of this is the discovery of postbiotics, defined as soluble factors secreted by live bacteria or released after bacterial lysis, which fundamentally influence microbiome behaviour. For instance, the gut microbiota modulates the signalling properties of bile acids, which regulate several metabolic pathways in the host.
