When styling a furniture piece such as a sideboard, console, or a shelf that has a generous size of surface space, it can become a little intimidating and overwhelming at first on where to begin, especially when there so many ways you can do it.
Begin…
I always like to approach the “less is more”.
Begin with you main focal points using one or two items that you want your eyes to attract to.
If you work symmetrically, place the larger item in the centre and work other decor items around it.
During this time, you can layer your decor using books, trays and trinket boxes. Play with different levels of height to keep interest.
Balance is key.
At this point, you may take a step back and look at what you’ve put together - thinking something is missing or it still doesn’t look right.
Keep in mind to balance each ends of the zone your styling.
As you can see in the picture, I have placed visual weight using two lanterns both on one side of the ETU.
On the opposite side, you can see I’ve kept the surface area of the ETU minimal, but opted to place my tall plinth and plant there to achieve that balance.
