By giving our time to others and being happy as a result, we act in defiance of those who see the world as a zero-sum game, who think any gain comes at a cost to someone else. Empathy does not consume or take away in order to give joy. It's a miraculous aspect of the human spirit. We are lucky to have it, but it requires cultivation.
