The Tasman Lake, formed by the retreating Tasman Glacier, completely freezes over in winter. In summer, boat tours amongst its residual icebergs is a popular tourist activity. Alternatively, a short 1.3km trek up to this spectacular Tasman Glacier Viewpoint is one of the highest ROI hikes one can do in Aoraki/Mt Cook. Rock-hopping is absolutely optional.
