Life on Earth has suffered a catastrophic decline in diversity as a result of human activity over the past 50 years, according to the most comprehensive assessment ever undertaken of the global ecosystem.
A report released on Monday by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystems Services (IPBES) concludes that “nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history”, with species already becoming extinct “One million of Earth’s plant and animal species are at risk of extinction. “We are eroding the very foundations of our economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality of life worldwide,” said Sir Robert Watson, chair of the UN-sponsored IPBES.
