Following the latest CODE RED for humanity, in @ipcc most comprehensive environmental report to date, I wanted to share some solutions with the hope we don’t loose hope, or motivation to change, create and mobilise solutions.. After all humans have caused the problem so we can equally fix the problem too. The good news from the report is that human action still has the potential to determine the future course of climate.
The problem - it is clear that carbon dioxide is the main driver of climate change. Now accelerating global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees by 2040, 10 years earlier than predicted and feared. The consequences are devastating and we need to act now before they’re felt and realised.
The United Nations says the fashion industry is "widely believed to be the second-most polluting industry in the world".
It accounts for more than 20% of wastewater globally, the UN says.
As for carbon emissions, the industry is responsible for about 8% of the total worldwide. That's more than all international flights and shipping combined, the UN says.
As a consumer knowledge is power, what can we do?
- buy less buy better
-wear more and love longer
- fashion DOES NOT HAVE AN EXPIRY DATE nor do most products produced
- a huge carbon emitter is virgin nylon so buy up-cycled synthetics and wash rarely as micro plastics are released into the ocean
- embrace anything hemp, linen is very good for water saving textiles
- buy organic cotton over standard to protect clean water
- seek anything you love made from regenerated waste, waste is a future resource
- share, swap and resell rather than discard
Solutions do exist and so many solutions are yet to be created.
Stay motivated to be the difference and don’t loose hope.
