The road to understanding the fungal kingdom has been long and arduous. In classical times it was believed that lightning strikes produced mushrooms, and even into the mid-eighteenth century, naturalists didn’t understand fungi well. Early mycologists also investigated organisms that we now know are not true fungi such as downy mildews and slime moulds, which are still named as true fungi.
