"Cheers, to me. To be honest I almost didn’t go to this event. I was nervous to ‘show up’, my body is so physically different than all the other photos that were up on the walls, everyone else up there looked similar, the difference was in their captions, their experiences. But I went, I felt like I needed to place a face behind the photo, since no one knew what I actually looked like. Upon stepping into the gallery, I was instantly welcomed and comfortable, I talked to countless strangers about their postpartum journeys, and I talked about mine. Then when I was asked to sign up for the photoshoot, I thought no I can’t do that, im too different to look at, it’ll stand out too much. I was freaking out and talking myself down. Then I just decided I was doing it. As I was infront if that camera, I glanced over to the wall and saw my photo hanging up there and I thought to myself, I feel too safe. I need to do something bolder, I need to help break down a barrier. So I asked the photographer if I could whip my little bag out and let it be the main focus of the shoot. That goes to show you how comfortable this entire environment made me feel, in 5 years my own husband has seen me with my bag out probably 3 times. It’s just something that I keep covered up, and close to me, and private. It was thanks to all the incredible women who by talking to me, encouraged me to be brave and open up a different conversation. I hope I’ve done my ostomy community proud, for spreading awareness, and showing my postpartum body - bag and all.” The endlessly inspiring Ginger (@gingipie.sky) after she visited our Life After Birth Project Gallery in Toronto.
