"The first time I experienced racism. That’s right, I was a child.
6 years old being made fun of by the other kids for my hair and the color of my skin.
But it didn’t stop there, my teacher even projected her microagressions.
Can you imagine being a child and having a grown adult, your own elementary teacher say “I know your kind”? Can you imagine going home to your mom crying because you don’t understand why your teacher treats you different than the other kids, asking why she doesn’t like you?
Racism. Yeah I said it. It is important for you to read that word and understand at a core level that it has been ingrained in people from a young age. It starts at the dinner table and in a home. It starts with conversations and the dialogue that parents are creating with their children.
I cannot explain how heavy my heart has been these past few weeks seeing so many innocent Black Lives stolen. How I shook and cried in my husbands arms after I watched George Floyd being killed in broad daylight. There have been one too many lives stolen from societal and systemic racism.
It’s uncomfortable, and that’s how it needs to be until people are held accountable.
If you want to be a true ally, then speak up. Speak up in that meeting, speak up when what that person has said is sitting in your gut wrong, speak up when you hear and see the racism (whether or not a POC is in the room). This is how we’re going to break this cycle by bringing it out in the open, under the light, and holding people accountable."
