"When I look at my scars today, I see her.
No, she’ll never know what it’s like to feed from me. No, we will never bond over this shared experience. I knowingly and willingly took that choice away from myself and her years ago...but I’d rather this child have a mother for as long as possible than be able to breastfeed. A nipple is a nipple...no matter if it comes from a woman or a bottle and let me tell ya: she doesn’t know the difference, and we bond in many other ways. I sing to her and she’s immediately at ease. I give her a bottle and she’s happily fed. When I smile and she smiles back, everything is right in the world.
Breast milk didn’t make any of that happen.
I look forward to the day when I can confidently tell her that I made a decision at 29 years old that didn't just change the way she was fed as a baby, but would allow her to have a mother who did everything she possibly could to be around for as long as she possibly could.
Four year ago today, I had my breasts removed for me.
For health.
For life.
For freedom.
Today, I know it was ultimately for her."
