“What do you love about your shape?” The director asked.
Thinking from my toes, up, I replied, “My muscular right leg, my soft stump, my squishy belly, my shoulders, my diastema, the shape of my head, and my mouth.” I could have added I love that my belly is a deflated bouncy castle because I’ve grown and birthed three children. I could’ve said I love that my mismatched legs are the story of surviving bone cancer. I could’ve said I love that my shape carries so many stories.
I did not say my butt. And when @sarathecamel first suggested the pose for the this picture, I was hesitant.
I was also curious and even a little jealous, like “I wish I was bold enough to strike that pose… but am I!?”
It turns out, yes, I am. I was invited to this campaign to be me, just me, exactly me, in this body.
And then, I took off the robe… not gonna lie, I was nervous. But I was ready, too, to try something new and to be that bold soul.
I felt liberated. And powerful.
Representation matters, and bodies like mine are rarely depicted as strong, beautiful, important. But I am. You are.”
The incredibly inspiring @christacouture from our #LoveYourShape campaign last month.
Thank you for your powerful words and for willing to bare it all for us, Christa!
