Emeralds are known for their deep green color which typically comes from trace amounts of chromium or vanadium in their crystal structure. A well cut emerald will further enhance this color. Zambian emeralds, (pictured) are particularly known for their color which often exhibits a bluish or bluish-green hue. This is influenced by traces of iron in the emerald’s crystal structure and along with their clarity, is what makes these types of emeralds so desirable. Scoring a 7.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, emeralds are the softest of the big four precious stones (diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds). While they’re more durable than other gemstones such as opals, pearls and turquoise, they require extra care when it comes to everyday wear.
