With beauty, sometimes comes treachery. This stunning stretch of water is the Babinda Boulders. An idealistic waterway surrounded by rainforest, mystery and a local legend near Cairns.
A section of this running water is known as The Devil's Pool and is the site of the local Yindinji legend, which explains how the Babinda Boulders were formed.
The tale is about Oolana, a young woman from the Yindinji Tribe. After she was promised to a respected tribal elder, she met a handsome young warrior called Dyga, who was from another tribe. They fell in love.
To escape her promised marriage the young lovers fled their tribes and escaped into the wilderness to continue their affair.
Elders searched for them and they were captured. Dyga was dragged away. Oolana escaped and was in despair. She threw herself into what is now known as the Devil's Pools and her anguished cries turned into the pools torrents.
It is believed that Oolana's spirit still haunts the Devils Pools, pulling young men to their untimely deaths.
So, we do warn you if travelling to this area please be careful, mindful and respectful. Especially if you are a young man.
