Today we are featuring visionary leader Wangari Maathai. She is the first African woman to receive the #NobelPeacePrize and also the first female scholar from East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate in #biology.
In 1977 she founded an organization called "The Green Belt Movement," which planted over 30 million trees.
Maathai's mobilization of African women was not limited to #sustainable development; she saw tree-planting in a broader perspective, including #democracy, #women's rights, and international solidarity.
