A large number of popular American dance styles originate from the continent of Africa. Today, they continue to be developed and reinvented by mainly black creators around the world.⠀
For our Spring/Summer 2020 collection (filmed in Sept. 2019) we worked with some of Toronto’s best professional dancers with the intention to highlight the dance styles called Afro, Hip Hop, Waacking, Voguing and Street Jazz. These styles were developed as creative outlets of expressions for youths around the world. ⠀
From Harlem to the Bronx during the '70s, Brooklyn during the '90s, or Lagos and Accra today, these dance styles are constantly being developed and reinvented.⠀
The steps and moves you learn in your gym class or see on TikTok are in most cases invented by black creators. Black culture and in this case, dance, inspires EVERYONE and we want to give credit where credit is due.⠀
MICHI is a company that stands for originality and is crazy about dance. It has always been important for us to give credit to the originators and we believe other brands and creators should do the same. ⠀
