We are 5 mamas, friends, and neighbors from Pleasure Point, Santa Cruz: Ashley Lloyd Thompson, Katie Loggins, Jenny Bennett, Grace Gooch and Mayra Aguilar. We all are drawn to our cold salty ocean and fell in love with surfing years ago. Recently we have become much closer as we became pregnant around the same time. Dubbed “the Surf Mamas” from a documentary film we recently starred in, our story is about friendship, pregnancy and surfing. Through surfing and our love for the ocean, we become friends. When we all became pregnant around the same time, it was natural that we turned to each other for support and encouragement. Ignoring people who told us to stop surfing while pregnant, we decided instead to listen to our own bodies and continue doing what we love -- just with some extra precautions and modifications. We laughed together about the challenges we faced as our bellies grew bigger and our wetsuits no longer fit, but also shared our joy of being in the water with our unborn child inside us experiencing the ocean together as one.
Once our babies were born, we faced new challenges in dealing with our changed bodies and the responsibilities of caring for a needy little one. Finances wouldn’t allow any of us to pay for child care, so instead we once again turned to each other, creating a surf mama group. We chose to come together as a community, mamas and women to support each other in continuing to surf.
