My due date is today, and suddenly I feel horribly unprepared - I would love to breastfeed but my midwife says it takes a 3 days roughly for our milk supply to come in properly - will my baby be super hungry waiting or will she be satisfied with what she gets from the boob until then? Answer from Sasha: It often takes 3 days for your milk to come in but it can take more or less and there is absolutely NO worry about it taking up to 5 days even. Before your milk comes in you will be producing what is called colostrum (you are even producing it now and if you squeeze your breast a bit I bet you will see it). Colostrum is a thick yellow substance that is filled with all the vitamins and antibodies that your baby needs post-birth. Baby only needs about a tablespoon of this a day and it will protect him from all kinds of bacteria, help them pass their first bowel movement and give them all the nutrition they need in the first few days before the milk comes in.
It is very common that babies loose weight after birth so please don't worry about that. Almost ALL babies do and they will gain back that weight usually within the first week. Make sure you work with a lactation consultant to get a good latch in the first few days postpartum as this will set you and your little girl up for breastfeeding success.
The more you put baby to the breast those first few days, the faster your milk will come in. It is the act of her sucking that tells your body that it is time for the real stuff. ;)
