There's a new game in town and it's called large-scale porcelain slabs. This backsplash is a matte finish porcelain slab, not tile, so no grout, no seams. It mimics the look of a true marble, in this case, Calacatta, and if you get a good quality one, it's pretty darn hard to tell this from the natural stone.
I am a lover of natural stone, but this is usually lower in budget and won't patina or require maintenance. You have to have a top-rate installer because install is tricky and not easy, but once it's up, it's set and forget...except you will never forget it because it's insanely beautiful.
