Photojournalist Paula Bronstein (@pbbphoto) started traveling to Afghanistan almost 15 years ago — documenting what it’s like to live in a war-torn country. “I’m lucky to be able to bring attention to people who are often invisible,” Paula, who’s based in Bangkok, says. “As a woman, I’m able to give a voice to Afghan females who quite often remain silent.” This photo was captured during a five-day stay at an Afghan National Army training camp outside of Kabul.
Tonight in Washington, D.C., Paula’s work is being celebrated by the IWMF (@theiwmf) with an Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award honorable mention. While she may have seniority in the field, she has a positive outlook about age. “I think a lot of women in their 50s feel like there is a stigma attached. You want to act young, and you want to look young. But everything depends on how you live your life, your energy, your passion.”
