“It’s like we have been waiting for another leader, when in actuality, the change can begin with anyone of us,” says Ruddy Roye (@ruddyroye), a Jamaica-born photographer who now lives in Brooklyn, New York. Ruddy launched @everydayblackamerica in the wake of events in Ferguson, Missouri, and enlisted photographers around the country to share their perspectives, including Sheila Pree Bright, (@shepreebright), Jahi Chikwendiu (@jaheezus), Jason Evans (@ilikevans1), and Ken McFarlane (@365ken). “I wanted to see how black folks lived in different sections of America,” Ruddy explains. “My intended audience is both black and white communities. I want black folks to be empowered by the images, and for white folks to have the idea that we are not that different.
