On the first Saturday of every March, approximately fifty mushers and their teams of sled dogs gather in Anchorage, Alaska, to kick off the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The race takes competitors on a more than 1,100 mile journey across Alaska—from Anchorage in the south to the remote city of Nome along the state's western coast—and exposes competitors to the most extreme weather Alaska has to offer.
