Every year on Dec. 7 – “a date which will live in infamy” – the U.S. observes Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. In 1941, the Empire of Japan attacked the United States's naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, leading to America's entry into World War II.
Pearl Harbor, known to Hawaiians as Puʻuloa, remains the homeport of the US Pacific Fleet and houses a number or memorials for those who died in the attacks. The USS Arizona Memorial is the most famous of the memorials. Dedicated in 1962, it's designed in the form of a memorial bridge floating above the sunken USS Arizona, and is accessible only by boat.
