Kairouan, founded in 670 CE by Uqba ibn Nafi, is a historic city in Tunisia and a key center of early Islam in North Africa. As the capital of the Aghlabid dynasty in the 9th century, it became a hub of Islamic scholarship and culture. It is home to the Great Mosque of Kairouan, a landmark of Islamic architecture.
