Yasser Arafat arriving in Hebron, Palestine 🇵🇸 c. 1997
//
Today marks 20 years since the death of Yasser Arafat, the former leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation and President of the Palestinian Authority.
// “The path of armed struggle is the only path, and there’s no other path for us to reach Jerusalem.” A strong advocate of armed resistance and mass mobilisation, Arafat became the face of the Palestinian national movement for self-determination. His campaign for global recognition culminated in the signing of the now defunct 1993 Oslo Accords with Israel.
// Two decades on from his death, Arafat’s thoughts on armed struggle and the path to an independent state remain as relevant to Palestine’s future as ever.
