In the 1960s, during a period of optimism in the Arab world, the Lebanese Rocket Club emerged as a bold attempt to realize Lebanon’s scientific dreams. Founded by Manoug Manougian, a young professor at Haigazian University in Beirut, and a group of his students, the club defied limited resources and initial university reluctance to pursue rocket experimentation. In 1960, the club successfully launched its first rockets, named “Arz” (Cedar), capturing public and governmental attention. The Lebanese army eventually provided support, and the project gained national fame, even featuring on Lebanon’s postage stamps. The club’s most advanced rocket, Cedar 8, launched in 1966 with a range of 200 kilometers.
