Established in 1866 as the Syrian Protestant College, it was renamed the American University of Beirut in 1920. Its been one of the most influential universities in the world, for example, 20 AUB alumni were delegates to the signing of the United Nations Charter in 1945—more than any other university in the world. The list of alumni includes over 20 Prime Ministers and Presidents and over 50 Ministers from across the world.
