Omar El Mokhtar Street in Gaza City, the difference between c. 1950s and today // Omar Mukhtar Street is the main street of Gaza City. Gaza’s hotel strip is a part of Omar Mukhtar Street and most of Gaza’s most important buildings are located along the street. It’s named after Omar Mukhtar, a Libyan revolutionary leader who led the native resistance against the Italian colonization of Libya. Now both the street and the surrounding district are a landscape of debris. Some buildings have collapsed under bombardment, the multiple storeys pancaked on top of each other.
