Souk El Trouk was initiated in the early 17th century by Yusuf Dey to satisfy the Turkish community. Initially, it was dedicated to tailors and embroiders of Turkish costumes, such as the kaftan. Its main clients were the Turkish militia in Tunis and the dignitaries of the Beylik regime.

The Beylik of Tunis, also known as the Kingdom of Tunis, was a largely autonomous beylik of the Ottoman Empire located in present-day Tunisia. Between 1861 and 1864, the Beylik of Tunis became a constitutional monarchy after adopting the first constitution in Africa and the Arab world. The country had its own currency and an independent army, and in 1831, it adopted its flag, which is still in use today
