Here, in 1881, was concluded the Bardo Treaty, which ended the independence of Tunisia. While Tunisia had come under the control of the Ottoman Empire in 1574, it had a lot of autonomy to run its own affairs under the local Bey. Bey was originally the title of the provincial governor. From the early 18th century, the Bey became the head of state of the Kingdom of Tunis while still nominally subordinate to the Ottoman Sultan.
