The ancient grid of Timgad, Algeria 🇩🇿 It’s hard to believe that the now barren hills of North Africa were once the bread basket of the Roman Empire. But poor farming practices eroded the rich top soil and a drying climate caused it to be abandoned in the 8th Century, and then buried in blowing sand. There it lay for a thousand years, until it was discovered and excavated in 1881 via @geosteinmetz
