Funerary complex of Sultan Qaytbay in Cairo's City of the Dead, Egypt 🇪🇬 c.1880's // The Funerary complex was built by Sultan al-Ashraf Qaytbay in Cairo's Northern Cemetery and was completed in 1474. Qaytbay was a mamluk (slave) who was purchased by and served under several Mamluk Sultans until finally becoming Sultan himself, making him another person to go from slave to Sultan. He is known for at least 85 structures he built or restored in Egypt, Syria, Palestine, and Mecca, including 17 in Cairo.
