On this day 23 years ago, Bill Clinton ordered a cruise missile attack on the largest pharmaceutical factory in Sudan. Al-Shifa factory produced 90% of Sudan’s pharmaceuticals. Its bombing led to a public health catastrophe with tens of thousands of people dying from malaria, tuberculosis, and other treatable diseases. The U.S. claimed that the factory was producing chemical weapons and tried to link it to Osama bin Laden. When none of this turned out to be true, the U.S. blocked a United Nations investigation into the attack. Sudan has requested an official apology multiple times since the incident, but the U.S. never expressed regret nor paid compensation for the attack. Via @redfishstream
