Ancient oasis town of Ghadames, Libya. With no plumbing, or sanitation, residents say they were happy to move when modern housing was offered 1982, but most still maintain their ancestral homes, which are decorated with elaborate designs (2nd photo). The underground nature of the city keeps it significantly cooler than outside, and most people slept on their roofs in the hot summer months. The city is navigated by a network of covered adobe corridors, and there are also footpaths that connect most of the rooftop sleeping areas. Women preferred to use the rooftop walkways for social activities. The town was largely untouched by the revolution, but gets few visitors in these unstable times. Via @geosteinmetz
