The Norias of Hama are a number of norias ("wheels of pots") along the Orontes River in the city of Hama, Syria. Only seventeen of the original norias remain, some of them as old as the Byzantine era. Many of the wheels were destroyed when the Ba'athist regime of Hafez Al-Assad violently put down an uprising in the 1980s when thousands of prisoners and civilians were also killed in the "Hama Massacre".
