The Terraces surround the Shrine of the Báb, a shrine dedicated to the founder of the Baháʼí Faith, on Mount Carmel. The Baháʼí Faith was established by Baháʼu'lláh in 1863 in Iran. It later spread to Palestine and the rest of the world when ʻAbdu'l-Bahá a main figure of the Baháʼí Faith moved to Palestine. He supported the people of Palestine during the early 20th century famine and earned a knighthood from the British authorities.
