Uch Sharif was founded by the Greek leader Alexandria the Great during his invasion of the Indus Valley in 325 BCE by as the "city of Alexandria on the Indus". Uch was an early stronghold of the Delhi Sultanate during the Muslim conquest of the subcontinent. It was also was a regional metropolitan centre between the 12th and 17th centuries, and became a place of refuge for Muslim religious scholars fleeing persecution from other lands.
