The Mosque is the oldest mosque in Egypt as well as the whole of Africa and is the largest mosque in Cairo. It was designed by the prominent Egyptian architect, Saiid Ibn Kateb Al-Farghany, who was an Orthodox Christian. Its location at the top of a hill is, according to legend, the place where Noah's Ark came to rest after the flood.
