“endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the womb lining grows elsewhere, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. seeing endometriosis on the front page of the metro - even if it is an ad, made me well up (doing a little cry as i write this). it means so much.
i started with - what I believe now was endometriosis symptoms in 2011 - and i finally got a diagnosis in May 2021. it took ten years for me to get a diagnosis - and it is not just me: on average, it takes a shocking eight years.
as i remember it, my symptoms suddenly took a turn for the worse in 2020 and it was weirdly routine. i would wake up on the second day of my period at around 5am with the worst pain - i would get myself to the bathroom and, more often than not, pass out in pain. my partner lost count of the number of times he would peel me off the floor. i would then spend around an hour shaking from the pain, before ‘braving it’ and going to work. horrible.
it took multiple visits to the doctor and two gynaecologists before i was finally diagnosed. initially, i was relieved to get a diagnosis and i still am. but the feeling quickly turned to being overwhelmed - what should i eat? what can i do to stop this getting worse? i felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders.
working with my gynaecologist, i went with the coil and it has helped me with my heavy bleeding and pain. but, i was offered no help from a dietician, no regular check ups or other things that i thought would be routine.
i really hope times are changing. a tv show can have a huge impact on society, so i am hopeful.
