let's talk about the 🩸emoji. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ before 2019, if you were on your period the only emojis you had to show you were bleeding were likely '😫🥺😈🍫🆘'. now, we have the '🩸' emoji to let people know we're bleeding... but how useful is this emoji to opening up the conversation around periods? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 47% of bleeders aged between 18-34 stated that having a dedicated period emoji would make it easier for them to talk about periods with friends and colleagues. plan international UK [who campaigned for the emoji] stated that as communication so heavily relies on technology and emojis, having a way to visually represent how you feel is so important, and the use of the period blood emoji allows bleeders to show what they're feeling without having to physically text it, and having an emoji representing something once so stigmatised normalises the conversation in society. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ however, some arguments state that reducing the conversation to an emoji means people once again don't have to have actual discussions around periods, and would feel awkward saying they were bleeding IRL opposed to using the emoji. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ how do you feel about the 🩸 emoji, and do you feel it helps normalise period conversation? comment below!
