let's talk PCOS 🧡 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ PCOS [polycystic ovary syndrome] affects 1 in 10 women, and is notoriously difficult to diagnose, with many sufferers struggling for years before receiving the medical attention they require. but... what is it? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🟣 essentially, PCOS is when you have anovulatory cycles. these are where you don't actually ovulate. just think of it as the egg not leaving the nest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🟣 we can all experience anovulatory cycles but when these are frequent it can cause an overproduction of androgens. androgens are commonly known as male hormones. but, just to clarify, these aren't just male hormones. you know how we feel about this kinda labelling. these are really important kinda hormones helping us with sexual arousal, responsiveness and the synthesis of oestrogen. so let's stick with androgens shall we. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🟣 if you are having irregular periods, experiencing symptoms linked to the overproduction of androgens or just generally have any other concerns about your menstrual cycle, then getting in touch with your doctor is always advised. no bleeding babe should be suffering in silence. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ head to our fem space to read our latest blog post by an ohne babe with PCOS, and her experience 🧡 EDIT: Please note we have educated ourselves further on the use of the word ‘womxn’ and have recognised that this term is more damaging and less inclusive than previously thought. We apologise for its use and please note this will no longer be in any ohne copy moving forward. Thank you to our amazing community for the messages and helping us do better.
