"This rock formation was formed over 30 million years ago at the center of three volcanic pressure ridges that pushed the rock out, capping the throat of the volcano. Over time the rest of the volcano eroded away, leaving this alone in the middle of a flat plain.⁠ ⁠ The Navajo called it Tsé Bitʼaʼí or “the rock with wings”. It was said the rock was a piece of land that became a bird, carrying the ancestral people of the Navajo on its back.
