It’s hard for me to give myself permission to slow down. As a native East Coaster, a specialty-trained ER doctor, and a serious lifelong athlete, I’m hard wired for efficiency, productivity, and WORK. I’m generally awful at relaxing - I feel guilty when I’m just sitting there with a cup of tea. Today, though, after a few weeks of poor quality, monkey-brain sleep, I felt my wheels starting to wobble. I started to get that “live wire” sensation, where you feel like the wrong comment by an innocent person could make you burst into tears. When it gets to that point, luckily, I have learned to listen.
Instead of pushing through the day like I often do, I packed up and came home. I had that cup of tea, answered a few emails, and took a little nap. I put this beautiful Adzuki mask on my skin with a big spoonful of raw, local honey, and sat in the hot tub for twenty minutes. And now I will putter slowly in the kitchen and make something healthy for my family for dinner.
I didn’t have to do an expensive spa treatment, or take a whole day to travel somewhere special. The power of a few, simple, slow hours is enough for me to find myself again. Now I just have to work on slowing down a little earlier, before the wheels start wobbling! ❤️
