Bloating during your period. Let's talk about it. Yes, it happens to the best of us, (an estimated 70% of women!) but WHY?
Fluctuations in estrogen levels and a sharp drop in progesterone occurs right before you start your period. As a result, of increased estrogen levels, your body starts to retain water. On top of that, progesterone which has higher levels in the latter part of your cycle can cause a slower digestive track? What happens then? More symptoms of bloating.
The good news: period bloating usually goes away after a few days of menstruating.
Cool! So what helps bloating?
🍌: Protein and potassium-rich foods (i.e. bananas and asparagus!)
🤸♀️: Working out! Although it may feel like the LAST thing you want to do, it is a great way to alleviate PMS symptoms, specifically bloat.
🙅♀️🍷☕️: Sorry to be the bearer of bad news -- alcohol can enhance bloating, while coffee can dehydrate and thus cause water retention.
💤: Sleep! During some quality shut-eye, the water retained in your belly is able to move back into the body and be eliminated.
