1. WIPERS ‘Over The Edge’
First discovered this album in a small, perfectly dingy 2nd hand record store in Berlin many moons ago. After falling head over heel for ‘Over The Edge’, I immediately started tracking down and consuming the rest of the Wipers/ Greg Sage discography that same month. Originally released in 1983 - still crucial to this day.
2. SONIC YOUTH ‘Goo’
While these days I probably prefer Sonic Youth’s ‘Sister’ and ‘Daydream Nation’, ‘Goo’ is still the first Sonic Youth album I really obsessed over. Noisy and off-kilter at times, but endlessly cool song writing.
3. REPLACEMENTS ‘Let It Be’
Untouchable, timeless song writing, wrapped up in a train wreck rock n roll story that was, the Replacements. Play ‘I Will Dare’ and ‘Unsatisfied’ until your speakers rattle.
4. MAGIC DIRT ‘Friends In Danger’
An absolute essential slab of dark, noisy Aus-rock! The perfect dose of mood, melody, angst and feedback. Magic Dirt are still one of the finest rock bands in the country!
5. PATTI SMITH ‘Horses’ - Another essential album that requires constant revisiting to find the real gold! Perhaps considered as much of a poet as a musician, it’s always been clear that Patti Smith’s words and vocal delivery are the soul of her albums - very much true of ‘Horses’.
